JSW Steel unit forms JV with UK's Severfield.
JSW Steel Ltd said its unit has formed an equal joint venture with a unit of UK Severfield-Rowen, for a steel project.
The project will be based in Bellary district in Karnataka and is estimated to cost 30 million pounds, with a capacity of 350,000 tonnes annually. It will be funded through a mix of two-thirds debt and the rest equity.

The Italian firm Microstudio is today a company focused in manufacturing of instruments for the control of mechanical parts, mainly springs.
It is very sensible to the customer’s requirements, because a strong attention to these problems leads to create items reliable and functional more and more.

The standard of quality requires more and more verifications and inspections of the test instruments; furthermore, generally speaking, the verification of a good functionality of a tester is not within everybody’s grasp especially for compression or torsion spring load testers.
In order to offer to the Customers the best service and to assure the perfect functionality of the instruments with the time, Microstudio has established a calibration laboratory.

India. Punjab steel makers cut production by 50%.
Hit by sluggish demand and declining prices, Punjab's steel makers have slashed production by 50 per cent to minimise their mounting losses.
"We have reduced our production capacity by 50 per cent as the demand for steel and prices have dipped sharply," North India Induction Furnace Association President K K Garg said on Saturday.

Nigeria: Wempco invests $750 million to boost Nigerian steel industry.
Western Metal products Company Limited (WEMPCO) has made a fresh investment of $750 million (about N88.5 billion) in a new steel plants at Ibafon, Ogun State, saying it is to boost local steel production in the country.
Work in the factory which has a capacity to produce 750,000 metric tons of steel products, started three years ago, and it is expected to be completed by the third quarter of next year.

The Wire China 2008 Exhibition took to SAS Engineering & Planning Srl a record of contacts. A lot of people visited the Exhibition and they all showed a great interest towards SAS production of combined drawing lines from coil to bar and from bar to bar. The visitors appreciated a lot the flexibility and the customization which SAS Engineering & Planning can guarantee to each single customer.
An equipment which was very appreciated was the Two-Rolls Straightening machine RL120 for the straightening of round bars with range 20 ÷ 120 mm. This machine stands out for its performances, high reliability and high quality.
Some of SAS Engineering & Planning’s strategic targets for the next years will be China and all Far-East Countries.

Steel unions head to Japan to talk emissions.
Union leaders from Australia's steel industry will head to Japan this week to discuss the implications of a global emissions trading scheme.
The national secretary of the Australian Workers Union, Paul Howes, says the Tokyo meeting will bring together union leaders from all the major steel-producing countries across the world.

Chinese steel companies to forge united front on ore prices for 2009.
China Iron and Steel Association has called a conference of the largest domestic steel makers to work out a common stand in bargaining with major iron ore producers in the 2009 round of price negotiations starting next month, the English newspaper China Daily reported on Tuesday.
This round of negotiations is expected to be different from previous ones that were largely dominated by the ore suppliers. This time, the market situation has changed as fallout from the global credit crisis has greatly depressed demand, the daily said.

Eurofer sees EU 2009 steel consumption down 0.8 pct.
Steel consumption is likely to shrink next year from the 2008 level, with the biggest decline in demand in the first half of the year, the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries said on Monday.
Eurofer forecast that output in sectors using steel would drop 0.8 percent in 2009 after a 0.6 percent increase forecast for this year as the whole economy slows to a growth rate of 0.2 percent from 1.3 percent seen this year.

DEM Wire Rolling Technology innovative line for flats
DEM Wire Rolling Technology, a company specialised in cold rolling processes has recently started up in Germany a new concept high speed line for the production of flat wire, obtained with very close tolerances starting from wire rod, thanks to a new patented motorized head.
The new rolling stand has been developed with a fully automated system that allows flat wire measurement and self-adjustment on closed loop control. All working and set up parameters for each flat size are stored in the PC memory and can be retrieved any time a product has to be re-rolled to give automatic rolling line set-up.
A standard line consists of a double pay-off, a mechanical descaler, a new concept brushing machine, a rolling cassette for wire calibration, 3 motorized heads with 3 dancers, a special laser for tolerance control, a fully automated coiler and an automated coil ejection and tilting unit for coil removal from the coiler.

The stainless steel market is experiencing a slowdown in demand, on the local and international front, says Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (Sassda) chairperson Sampie van Rooyen.
“We have found that some of the smaller manufacturers are really far stretched with debt, and are taking strain. At that level of the market, one can see the effects of the slowdown,” he comments.
